Life Drawing || Chalk and Charcoal and Artistic License

Today I learned that this medium works better when I resist the urge to blend colours, especially in the short poses, as it lends itself to workflow. Artistic License is also important to 'fix' reference when the pose wouldn't make sense without an imaginary prop added, or if it looks strange to draw, limbs can be manipulated to help it look better.

Life Drawing || Single line

In this set of drawings I used a single line to draw the entire figure without underlying structure. I think it worked best in the shorter poses at the top of this post, since the half hour pictures have an overworked look to them, probably from the model moving slightly. It would be better to use this as structure or reference for other drawings rather than relying on it by itself.

Life Drawing || Charcoal Storyboard

I took the opportunity here to practise drawing fabrics using the reverse 'v' technique, as the figure we were referencing had a shirt and shorts on for a change. It worked well on a basic level, and i hope to apply it to my illustrations in time, perhaps to improve their overall quality or to further manipulate into more suggestive shapes.

Life Drawing || Silhouettes and Posing

Coloured pencils are useful for providing a mild study of figures, but it is difficult to produce anything feasibly good without simple hardship of labour, therefore it was important to apply artistic licenses where necessary in the sketches underneath. By sampling this in the early stages it helped to focus my mind on more important issues regarding style.

Neon Sharpies (scented) really helped these models pop, in study of silhouettes and the avoidance of parallels in the body, the final result highlights a need for identifiable characteristics in animation.

Life Drawing || Surface Textures

In this session, i aimed to further study realistic textures created by the human composition.

I found that numerous details can have the positive effect of adding depth to flat surfaces, as well as covering the look of the raw medium.

Studying this has helped me understand how to apply more skill to my output.

Life Drawing || Ink and Colour = Power

In this episode we draw figures in ink with a brush. I wanted to do this because I was interested in the ideas of bold tone and colour in the hashtag 'Inktober' that I am participating in. To do this I referred to another older session with a coloured hair portion that I intended to build upon. I think that by doing this I have initiated a conceptual style which can be applied to my personal work in order to produce something that has a more professional appeal. In the next session I want to try using only coloured inks and not black.
